I've started working on porting Ruby (one of the best things from  
Japan) to the Nintendo DS (another of the best things from Japan)..  
(all I need is to be eating sushi while working on it and I would be  
very happy, the Sake will wait until I have been successful :) )

I've been looking at yarv for some time, and checked out the latest  
today.  I'm quite impressed by the benchmarks.  My though now is that  
yarv would be a good base for my port, although the footprint might  
be a bit large.  It's worth exploring, however.
